Helping Out: Disaster Relief
On May 27, 2011, the Southeast was hit by a devastating chain of severe storms and tornadoes. Many homes and towns were decimated and even leveled. One of the towns that faced this destruction was Hackelburg, AL. Like so many other towns hit by the storm, Hackleburg had been wiped off the map. Soon after the storms were over, Owl Hollow loaded up supplies and food and headed towards Hackleburg.
“Going through Hackleburg could only be described as driving through a war zone. Homes were destroyed by flying debris. Businesses and factories were leveled down to the concrete slab. You would see a vehicle crumpled like a soda can. You could tell it was red, but you could not distinguish what kind of vehicle it was. One of the things that astonished me the most were the trees that the wind had stripped the bark off of. They were just these white pillars without any bark or branches. They just stood with everything else to show the devastating power of this storm. ”
- Steve Macon, Benevolence Deacon
Owl Hollow has striven to help people those in need, and it was evident that Hackleburg was in need of assistance. Supplies were carried to a camp where a community shelter was set up. The Hackleburg victims appreciation of the food and supplies left them speechless and overcome with emotion. Without words and with tears in their eyes, they embrace and thanked us for our generosity. It serves not only as a sobering reminder of how fragile this world really is, but that the greatest impact that we can have on others in their time of need is to provide a helping hand. Owl Hollow is working, praying, and preparing for disasters locally. Our goal is is to be ready so that we can be able to assist those is need with shelter, food, supplies, emotional, and ministerial needs. This is one of the many ways to show how much we care and display the love that Christ has shown us. Others must know how much you care before they care how much you know.
